As cherry blossoms reach full bloom, many people gather under the cherry trees to enjoy the traditional custom of flower viewing, known as "hanami."

Although hanami is strongly associated with cherry blossoms today, did you know that originally it was plum blossoms that held this distinction?

The tradition of hanami dates back to the Nara Period (710-794) in Japan. During that time, hanami meant viewing of plum blossoms. Since cherry trees were considered sacred and objects of worship, nobles enjoyed the beauty and fragrance of plum blossoms instead.

It wasn't until the Heian Period (794-1185) that cherry blossoms became the quintessential symbol of spring flowers, widely beloved and immortalized in poems found in the "Kokin Wakashu" anthology.

While nobles appreciated cherry blossoms for their aesthetic appeal, peasants had a different purpose for celebrating. Since ancient times, cherry blossoms have served as a “nature clock” indicating the change of season and time for rice planting. For peasants, the blossoming of cherry trees marked the beginning of a new agricultural cycle and heralded the arrival of spring.

Ishi-no-hito (Stone Man) ( @ishitoumi ) is an artist who collects stones at various beaches. Smooth stones washed and polished by the rough waves are his favorite. He considers the shape, color, pattern, texture, size, and density as he collects stones of different shapes, abstract, round, square; or stones that resemble a mountain, shell, or boat.

"In Japan, there is a culture of appreciating stones that has been passed down for generations such as Suiseki and Bonseki which involves picking up stones from rivers and perceiving them as mountains, waterfalls, or Buddhist statues. Youseki is a process that takes several decades to deepen the stone's character by exposing it to nature. Embedding the stone in a dedicated wooden base, it is displayed on a decorative stand in a tokonoma alcove. I consider this nature art that involves human intervention to some extent to be similar to bonsai," says the stone collector. He displays or stores his collection and occasionally touches and enjoys the texture.

"It's up to you in how you enjoy them. I personally like to play around such as orderly displaying twelve stones on a wooden board or arranging them based on a certain concept. This collection is titled '12 Stones.' Or I would place stones in a water basin and call it 'Imaginary Beach.' Essentially, it's just stones arranged and put in water. When I look at the stones, I reminisce the sea where I found them or project my mental landscape. It's also nice to simply gaze at the stones bathing in the morning light or setting sun."

Sakura-mochi is a traditional Japanese confectione

Sakura-mochi is a traditional Japanese confectionery, particularly popular during the cherry blossom season.

It consists of a dough made from wheat flour or glutinous rice, sweet red bean paste filling, and is wrapped in salted cherry blossom leaves.

Symbolizing the arrival of spring and the tradition of cherry blossom viewing, sakura-mochi offers a luxurious taste that encapsulates the culture and seasonal essence of Japan.

Did you know sakura mochi has different recipes and looks depending on the region?

There are broadly two types of sakura mochi: “Domyoji sakura mochi" made with Kansai-style mochi flour, and "Chomeiji sakura mochi" resembling a crepe made with Kanto-style wheat flour and shiratamako (glutinous rice flour).

Although the appearance and ingredients may be different, its all share the same delicious aroma of cherry blossoms.

Urushi is the natural resin collected from the lac

Urushi is the natural resin collected from the lacquer tree.

Dating back over 9000 years ago, it is said that this ancient technique of coating has been used throughout the daily lives of Japanese people.

Lots of patience and technique is required to extract the urushi. From the moment the seedlig is planted, it takes about 10 years for the special tree to fully grow, and from that single tree only 200 grams of it can’t be extracted.

Although the urushi requires a lot of time and technique, the coating is both hard and very flexible, making it tougher and superior to modern chemical paints.

It also has antiseptic, waterproof and moth-proofing properties, and is very strong against the high humidities of Japan.

But beyond its durability, the beauty and finish of the urushi is an artpiece that has become recognized throughout the world, and continues to hold onto the traditions in the everyday Japanese household.

Did you know that urushi seeds can be used to make tea?
Urushi tea is sold by Matsuzawa Urushi Studio( @matsuzawa_hokoan ) in Iwate Prefecture, the largest urushi production area in Japan.
It is a distinct scent that the hojicha makes by slowly roasting urushi seeds, and is an improved, easier-to-drink version of a tea traditionally drunk in the town of Joboji in Ninohe City, northern Iwate Prefecture.

It has a soothing, woody fragrance like the aroma of a kinako (soybean flour).

It has great health benefits like suppressing the rise of blood pressure. It is also caffeine- free so you can drink it before bedtime.
